Day 17

Today we went to The Big Winch Lookout where there is a big winch made out of old pipes. You can see almost all of Coober Pedy but all you can see of the underground houses are the entrance and the ventilation shafts. We then went to an Fahe's Underground house. Fahe's house was dug by Fahe and two other ladies and was converted into a house from an underground garage. The best things about underground houses are that you can expand just by digging into the ground further, they requires no heating or cooling because it stays the same all year between 21 and 25 degrees and does not need any materials. After lunch we went to an opal mine tour which also showed us some more underground houses, an old opal mine and a museum. We then went on a drive outside of the opal mine field area to an area called the Breakaway, and to some lookouts. When out of town it is flat land with some rough hills poking out of the ground. On our drive we also went to the wind turbine just out of town. After our drive we went to the shops to get more food and then returned to the caravan park.
